A drawing on a stoep
This work is inspired by the relationship I have with my childhood as well as the disintegration of this relationship. My grandmothers stoep is a fervent memory of mine from my time spent in the North West of South Africa, which includes, the polishing of the stoep early in the morning and the sites and encounters experienced on it.
In city (Johannesburg), however,  the absence of stoeps is clear. In this work, the stoep is used as a symbol of childhood that has started decaying with my permanent residency in the city.
The drawings on this work all showcase aspects of life in the North West that I remember and cherish dearly. The medium of this work is oil pastel on concrete, to imitate the drawing medium of children.

The drawing on the stoep, a “so called vandalism”, questions further, whether the decaying of childhood memories is a result of our own actions ( an intentional drawing on the stoep) or whether the decaying of our childhood memories is due to the altering of one's surroundings (vandalism) and the fleetingness of time.
