"Welcome Home"
In this work, I explore the themes of distance and communication in the context of my relationship with my grandfather. This artwork stemmed from a conversation I had with him during Christmas time in KZN. During this visit he reiterated that he would soon visit me in Johannesburg.
This moment is significant as we both are aware that the chances of this visit to Johannesburg happening are low due to his age and health.
I decided to create a portrait of him that would be set in my bedroom, which represents his great wish. In this work I painted on newspapers because my grandfather loves reading the news and it further speaks to the theme of communication.
